Wear bright, bold lipstick in September to back up and raise awareness to women’s mental health concerns.?
Liptember’s fabulous brightly coloured spread of Liptember lipsticks scream fun and daring for the, but the message behind those attention-grabbing lips is truly one of compassion and support with the women in this lives who could possibly be struggling with mental medical problems.
Women experience some mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress at higher rates than men. In actual fact, one in five Australian women every year depression the other in three are experiencing anxiety during their lifetime.
Liptember aims to lift funds to make programs and prevention means to help the mental health needs of women.
Campaign founder Luke Morris says mental health support services are better when they’re gender specific: “Men and women have different mental health needs and when research, programs and services are tailored towards gender we’re seeing more practical and accurate mental health support.”
Post-natal depression, which affects 15 per cent of women while in the first year of childbirth, and menopausal-related depression are samples of mental illnesses specific to women.
Post-traumatic stress disorder is doubly high in women than males, close to 90 per-cent of anorexia and bulimia is situated females, and they’re more likely to experience domestic abuse and workplace harassment.
The campaign has attracted high-profile supporters, for example comedian Mary Coustas, Olympian Lydia Lassila and blogger Sophie Cachia (above middle).
Lydia has witnessed several family and friends struggle with mental illness.
“What was most complicated was knowing they suffered without moaning. It is so important we get a new stigma to ensure people seems comfortable looking for help,” she says.
Liptember raised above $1.2 million dollars in 2019, and $3.5 million the way it started in 2010. Last year, the campaign presented a $400,000 donation to both Lifeline and then the Royal Women’s Hospital.
